What Is Mastery Learning PDF Print E-mail

Peer into Jonathan Bergmann or Aaron Sams’s classes and you will see something exciting happening. You will discover Mastery for Learning - 21st Century Learning That Works.

Mastery for Learning enables students to take responsibility for their own learning. Students conduct experiments, watch video podcasts, work on assignments, interact with the class Moodle site, have one-on-one discussions with their teacher, and get tutored by their peers and cadet teachers. This is Mastery Learning at work.

Mastery of Learning allows students to work at their own pace through the science curriculum. When they complete a unit they must demonstrate that they have learned the content by taking an exit assessment that includes both a lab and a written component. If students score less than 85% on these exit assessments, they must go back and re-learn those concepts they missed and retake the exam. Grades are no longer determined by a percentage but rather how much content they have mastered.

Using Podcasts & Vodcasts PDF Print E-mail
How to use podcasts and vodcasts in the classroom?

This site is devoted to teaching educators how to use podcasts and vodcasts to increase student achievement. This is the brainchild of Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams who are pioneers in the field of using vodcasts in the classroom. They have devised a new method of teaching called Pre-Vodcasting. In this model, students watch vodcasts at home and class time is spent in engaging hands-on activities and directed problem solving. Both Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams are High School Science teachers in Woodland Park Colorado, at the base of Pikes Peak. Thus far, students using the Pre-Vodcasting model have been very successful in mastering Chemistry. We believe that all teachers can benefit from Vodcasting their lessons live, and that the Pre-Vodcasting can revolutionize instruction in Math, Science, and Foreign Language.

Creating the Vodcasts: There are a number of different programs available to create vodcasts and many of them are listed HERE. We use a program called Snapkast which has proven to be the most convenient and least cumbersome way for us to produce our vodcasts.
